It Had to Happen, It Had to Hurt.

What is uppp people?! Y’all, this blog post is sooooo close to my heart and I’m ready to share it with you!

Everyone has heard the phrase, “Well, that had to hurt.” You say that when you’re looking from an outside perspective into a painful situation.

Now, I want to talk about a phrase coming from a different context by saying,

“It had to happen, it had to hurt.”

So many people say, “Why did God allow me to hurt?” Let’s talk about that! There are so many reasons why hurt could actually be a good thing! Did you know that there’s such a thing as Godly sorrow, also called Godly grief?

2 Corinthians 7:10

For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.

Sometimes God has to allow temporary hurt because it leads to greater things, such as salvation! God protects & guides us but sometimes hurt is unavoidable for growth. Although, every situation is so different and there are many reasons why God may have let you hurt for a certain period of time.

A few examples may be:

  • You were stubbornly living in sin and the only way to remove you was if it hurt. It had to happen.
  • Your immaturity was leaving you stagnant in your faith, you weren’t being pushed into greater faith. It had to hurt.
  • God knew you would be strong enough to endure the pain for a season IF you relied upon Him. He had to teach you dependency in the pain.
  • The only way God could get you to move to where you really belong is if He relocated you to somewhere else. He had to distance you.

What have I learned through sorrow, grief, & pain?

  • Pain is healthy for purging what doesn’t belong.
  • Moving hurts when you are attached to where you are.
  • Growth is impossible if you remain still.
  • When you hurt, you’re a mess but God turns that mess into a message.

Godly sorrow is necessary to lead us from sin, from what our flesh is attracted to, & from the opposite of what God’s true will is for our lives. Grieving is okay but staying where you are is not. I thank God for the pain that led me away from the things I did not know that I did not need.

Feeling sorrowful is sometimes what it takes to realize that some of God’s greatest blessings aren’t in what He gives but instead, what He takes away. It is because of this, I do not fear pain because Godly sorrow always leads to Godly gain!

James 1:2-4

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

With Jesus, even sorrow has beauty written all over it! Pain has perseverance attached to it! We can count it all joy!

2 Corinthians 7:11

Just see what this Godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

Godly sorrow leads us to a life of mindful righteousness. It had to hurt my friends. For your own good, it had to happen. God is found even in the midst of pain. This Godly sorrow is just a part of the process necessary for the production of so much joy-filled fruit! We all know, He takes what the enemy meant for evil and turns it for our good! That sorrow you’ve been feeling? He will exchange it for rejoicing!

Jeremiah 31:13

The young women will dance for joy, and the men—old and young—will join in the celebration. I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing.

Psalm 30:5

Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.
